There are many applications around today which are free to download and use. it is really a question of knowing where to find a specific piece of software for your needs.
Of course if you need commercial strength capability then you will normally have to pay. The cost of these packages varies quite a bit and new products come onto the market frequently, making comparisons difficult. We personally always go with established software pkgs firstly because the authors have ironed out most of the problems and secondly they are also continually upgraded for free.
